BOSTON UNIVERSITY

Innovative Center Combines Academics
and Hands-On Experience
Boston, Mass (March 14, 2002) - Boston
University announced the formation of The Sports
Institute at Boston University, an innovative
academic initiative offering courses in Journalism, Broadcasting
and Marketing. According to Institute Director Frank H.
Shorr, a respected broadcast journalist and eight time
New England Emmy Award Winner, a series of seminars featuring
prominent national and regional journalists, athletes,
and marketing executives will round out the program. Boston
University has begun accepting applicants for the Institute's
inaugural four-week session which begins May 27th. Space
is limited and the deadline for applications is April
26, 2002.
Author and journalist Jack Falla and
Dr. Chris Cakebread, a noted media specialist and Assistant
Professor at Boston University will join Shorr on the
Institute's faculty. Falla has authored five books including
Home Ice (McGregor Publishing) and Quest for
the Cup (Key/Porter Books) and has contributed
numerous articles to Sports Illustrated. Cakebread is
a former executive at the Boston advertising agency Hill,
Holiday, Connors & Cosmopolous.
Shorr collaborated with Professor Jim
Thistle, Director of the Broadcast Journalism Program
at Boston University, to create a challenging academic
environment in which students will have the opportunity
to learn from top industry experts. According to Shorr,
a former Executive Sports Producer at WHDH-TV and current
lecturer in the Journalism Department at Boston University,
The concept behind The Sports Institute has been a dream
of mine for years. It presents a unique opportunity for
students to receive intensive training and hands-on experience
in a short period of time. Imagine learning how to write
a sports story, present from the anchor desk, and market
your sports idea all in one setting.
